Busy Little Writers

Look at these writers! Wow! They have done such a great job with their independent writing stamina! We are at 15/ 20  minutes of writing independently after the writing mini lesson! They really enjoyed writing about their collections and being a "Judge". The chose the best item and wrote why and tried to give lots of reasons to convince the reader!. They will keep their collections here through next Wednesday. They are excited to write about a friend's collection on Tuesday!

James' mom was a Mystery reader on Thursday! We really enjoyed the book!

Info about being a Mystery Reader...
If you are interested in being a Mystery reader, here are the details:
Email me if you are interested and give me one or two dates and times that work for you to come in and read to the class. I will get back to about which date and time will work best. After we have the date and time scheduled, please do not tell your child that you are coming! You just need to bring a favorite picture book to read to the class. It only takes about 15 minutes or so. The kids will guess who the Mystery reader is about 5 minutes before you get here. Please check in at the office and the secretary will call me. Your child and a friend will come get you from the office.

Buddy Time/ updates

We met our fourth grade buddies on Monday! We will meet with our Buddies from Mrs. Gastreich's class throughout the school year to discuss the 7 Habits, service learning and other fun activities!

We have had a very successful first full week! We spent the week learning about each other, the classroom rules and routines. The morning routines are all about unpacking, morning meeting, daily 5 and writer's workshop. The afternoon routines are learning how to fill out the planner, mindful minutes, math workshop and packing up! As you can tell, they are busy! The brain breaks, mindful minute activities and recess are very helpful as they all adjust to our busy day!

Please be on the "look out" this weekend for an email from me with First Grade Curriculum information.

Thank you for sending in family pictures! The kiddos loved sharing their picture and talking about their family. The pictures are hanging on our classroom door!

Academic Update:

Daily 5- The students will continue to practice independent reading and writing behaviors during our Daily 5 time. Guided Reading groups will start after labor day.

Our first Writer's Workshop unit is Opinion/ Review Writing.  We need each kiddo to bring in a small collection to inspire their writing. Please see the letter in their folder from today.

Math Workshop-
We will begin our first unit on Tuesday- Shapes/ 3 D Shapes. Our math workshop will consist of a mini lesson and independent practice. The students will be working in stations after the mini lesson. One of their stations will be iPads. During this time, they will be working in a program called Dream Box. Please refer to the curriculum information for more details about Dream Box.

Social Studies-
We will begin our first unit- Citizenship. This topic goes very well with our beginning of the year routines.
