Writer's Workshop, Winter Writing Activity, Experimenting with air

The students have been working so hard on their informational chapter books. Yes, I did say chapter books! They are doing such a good job writing with a teaching voice about each chapter. They have many things to incorporate into their informational writing piece. This week's focus is how to write chapter titles, important things to remember when writing an introduction and adding a "how to" or "list" paper to a chapter.

We read the story Snowmen at Night today. They worked on a creative writing activity as a follow up to the story. The students wrote to a prompt- What would your snowman do at night? The most important part of this activity was to have fun with their story and see if they can remember to use the things they have learned during Writer's Workshop (introduction, sequence words, conclusion, using resources, no mixing, capitals, ending marks). They created really cute stories!

Science- exploring and learning about Matter. They experimented with air today. They had to observe and notice what happens with the elephant and bunny spinners. When they finished observing, they wrote about their observations and made predictions.  Ask your child - "what is matter?" Hopefully they answer- anything that has mass and takes up space.

reminders

Your child is bringing home the yellow Six Flags Reading log today. The reading they do each week for the homework reading log counts towards the Six Flags log. You just need to write the same book titles on the yellow Six Flags log and the homework reading log. Please keep the Six Flags log until the deadline- February 21. Every student in the class should get a free ticket to Six Flags- just keep doing the homework packet and write it down on the yellow log too!! :)

Word wall words/student spotlight

The students are doing a great job adding words to their word wall. They do different activities to build their understanding of the words. They use their personal "word wall" when writing. They are expected to spell "word wall" words correctly in their everyday writing.

Buddy Planting/ Buddy Brain Break / reminders

Reminders:
Our classroom goal for Adopt- a- Family is that each student try to bring in one item a day.
Here is a picture of our sticker chart and the donated items. Thank you in advance for your support!!

Burrr...
Now that the weather is getting colder please be sure to dress your child appropriately for school. Your child goes outside for recess 20 minutes each day. Please make sure they have a winter coat, hat and gloves when needed. When in doubt, send them with winter coats. Being outside on the playground is much colder than just waiting for the bus or walking into the building from the bus or car.

Look who is ready for recess!

Thank you

Thank you to all the parents for coming to conferences this week. I really enjoyed talking about all the progress the children have made this quarter. I am so proud of them! They are working so hard and love school!
I know some of you are interested in reviewing school concepts at home. Here is a list of the concepts we have been working on this past quarter.

Writer's Workshop:

  • Writing a personal narrative (small moment story) across pages with a beginning, sequence words and an ending.
  • The students also need to remember correct capitals, spaces, ending marks, and spelling sight words correctly.
  • They also use their strategies to spell words: stretch it, go find it, and/ or circle it.

Our next unit is writing informational text. Stay tuned for more information.

Math Workshop:
Math concepts this quarter:

  • Number sense
