Thank you to Connor's mom for being a Mystery Reader last week! They loved the book and loved the pumpkin book marks!

Last Friday, James had fun passing out books for his birthday treat to his classmates. After they wrote their name in their new book, they could choose to take the book home or keep it at school.

Academic Update

Word Work- We will review short vowel sounds this week. Up next- long vowel patterns.

Writer's Workshop-
We will continue with our 'How To' unit this week. The students have done a nice job transitioning from personal narrative writing ( small moment writing) to informational- How To writing. They are using sequence words in their writing while zooming in on conventions- spaces between words, no mixing ( no capital letters unless it starts a sentence or is a name) and spelling snap words correctly. We are learning how important it is for the reader to be able to read our writing.

Math-
We are finishing the chapter on addition strategies. Here are the strategies that have learned so far: count on, number line and doubles. The other strategies are doubles plus 1, related facts and fact families. They will be introduced to the math terms identity property and communicative property this week as well.

Science-
We will continue to learn What is Scientific Inquiry? They are learning What is A Scientist, Inquiry, Scientific Tools, Scientific Method and using their Five Senses to ask questions, make observations and get answers.

Thank you for your support with the Cookie Dough Sales. All of the staff at Concord appreciate your contribution!

I look forward to meeting with all of you on the 23rd or 25th for conferences. Thank you for scheduling a time to meet with me on Sign Up Genius!

A celebration was in order...We finished our first unit in Writer's Workshop- small moment writing. The students worked so hard during this unit. They developed the stamina for independent writing for 30-40 minutes and Bringing their Stories to life!  While they worked independently, I went around and held mini conferences with the students. My main teaching points during these conferences were ways to make characters talk, move, think and feel and using proper spacing between words, no mixing capitals and lower case letters, and using the word wall to spell snap words correctly.

For our Writers' Celebration today they shared their book with another first grader. The students enjoyed reading to a buddy and giving each other compliments. They all worked so hard and will be very excited for you to read their stories (at conferences).

Ryan is in the Spotlight this week. We loved his trains at Show -n -Tell today! He would like everyone to try to wear green and white tomorrow.
