Assembly/ 7 Habits shirt/ Buddies

Wow, what a Friday! We did it! We made it through our first full week of school! I am so proud of how hard they all have worked this week. The transition to first grade is not easy and they did great!

We had our first "Leader in Me" assembly today to celebrate the first full week of school. The teachers gave the students a gift today- a 7 Habits t shirt! Each student received a t- shirt and each grade level has a different color. The students will wear these shirts to school at least once a month when we have our "Leader in Me" school wide assemblies.
You child will bring their shirt home today. They can wear it as often as they want, but be prepared for at least once a month.

Check them out!!! So cute!

We visited with our 4th grade buddies after the assembly. They really enjoyed talking to their buddy and getting to know each other.
Ask your child about their buddy!

~Writer's Workshop~
We practiced thinking of an idea, getting our paper, a writing tool, sketching the pictures and writing words to go with our pictures! They were very excited to use all of the lovely PENS!!!
Please enjoy the video clips:

Have a wonderful weekend!

Helpful Information

Hello Families,
I just wanted to give you some helpful information. I plan to go into greater detail about all of this at the Curriculum Night on August 26th at 6pm in room 22.

Please be sure to check your child's orange folder and planner each night. The planner is a great tool for communication and hopefully only takes a few seconds to look at it each night. Your child will bring home most of the papers on Tuesday, but there still maybe a few papers in their folders each day. Your child needs to bring their orange folder and planner to school each day.

FYI: Our classroom can be a little chilly. You may want to give your child a sweater or sweatshirt to keep at school. Please be sure to write your child's first and last name on their sweatshirt.

Here is a sample of what the cover page of the homework packet looks like. The next page is the Tic- Tac- Toe choices for the actual homework. The students will need to read or be read to at least one book each night. They need to record the book title on the front page. They also need to complete 3 tic- tac- toe boxes of their choice. The homework will go home on Mondays and due on Fridays. I will explain the homework packet even more at the Curriculum Night.
Homework will not begin until September 2nd!

Getting to know our classmates

The students enjoyed listening to a wonderful story titled "How Full is your Bucket". This story gets us thinking about how our choices not only affect ourselves, but our classmates as well. They enjoyed working with a buddy and talking about what "fills up their bucket"!

Character Education at Concord

Our School Vision is:
Concord Flyers have the Power to Lead

This is from the family handbook:

Character Education at Concord
Character education is an integral part of the elementary curriculum. Through the use of explicit instruction, weekly class meetings, and monthly buddy class work, students explore and develop the qualities that help them become well-rounded, civic minded and caring students. Concord staff and students will focus our work on 7 Habits, based upon the work of The Leader in Me program.

The Leader in Me focuses on developing 7 highly effective habits in kids. Adapted from Stephen Covey's work on highly effective habits for adults, Sean Covey has developed habits that help our kids develop integrity, determination, and a caring heart. At Concord, our children will learn the 7 habits as a school. They will spend time discussing these habits on a regular basis in their classrooms, with their buddies, and the teachers will encourage a carry over into the home as well.

The 7 Habits

Habit 1: Be Proactive: You're in Charge!
Habit 2: Begin with the End in Mind: Have a Plan
Habit 3:Put First Things First:Work First, then Play
Habit 4: Think Win- Win: Everyone Can Win
Habit 5: Seek First to Understand, then be Understood: Listen Before you Talk
Habit 6: Synergize: Together is Better
Habit 7: Sharpen the Saw: Balance Feels Best
