Happy Valentine's Day! I hope everyone feels "extra loved" today! The kiddos had a great day! Their day started with a special visitor- Wally. Logan brought in his 9 week old puppy for his Spotlight Show-n -Tell. Wally is so precious. We had so much fun meeting him!
Next, we had a Mystery reader- Logan! We all loved the story The Wonky Donkey- especially because he read it in an Irish accent!
Thank you Logan!
Passing out Valentine's
On Friday (tomorrow)- They earned 50 points a little while back and it is time celebrate! They can wear their pj's, bring a blanket and a stuffed animal to school!
Academic Update-
Reading- We are becoming masters at Daily 5 and reading independently with our Just Right books. I am so proud of how well they are doing at their stations during Daily 5!
Word Study- They are rockin it with their phonics knowledge during word study. The love breaking apart words, saying the words and tapping the sounds as they write the words. We have been talking about how certain letters have bonus letters at the end- l, f, s, z, when it follows a short vowel.
Writer's Workshop- We started a new unit last week- Realistic Fiction. They are developing a pretend character, giving it a name and creating an adventure for their character. This week they are learning how to get their character out of "trouble" and the problem in the story doesn't start on the first page of the book. The problem is on page 3 or 4 and the last few pages are solving the problem and the ending. Over the next few weeks they will learn about ways to begin stories, bringing their stories to life and writing problems and solutions in their stories. Your child will need an empty cereal box by the end of the month. So, be sure to save the next cereal box and send it with your child. They will create a 3 book series by the end of the quarter and the cereal box will hold their "Box Set Series". Thank you in advance for your help.
Math- We are wrapping up subtraction and will start time and money. Our time and money unit will connect with our social studies topic.
Social Studies- We started economics this week. They are learning about needs and wants, consumers and producers, and goods and services. All of these terms will help them as we create The First Grade Teeny Tiny Concord Town. You will receive a note giving details about Teeny Tiny Concord Town in the coming weeks. We may be asking for some donations based on the type of business they want to create for our town. Our town will be on March 13th from 2-3pm. Parents are invited to join their child as they work and shop in the town.
