Update

Hello Families,
We had a wonderful week. The students did a really good job on the spelling test this week. They are also doing a great job turning in homework on Fridays. During Writer's Workshop they have been working on writing booklets about a small moment- something that happened to them. We are going to start narrative writing next week and focusing on a small moment and writing a sequence of events. During writing they need to be a "responsible writer" and use tall, short and hang your bottom letters when writing, they also need to remember capitals, spaces, ending marks and no mixing (capitals and lower case letters in a word). When they get to an unknown word they need to stretch through it, use their resources in the room, and/ or circle it. They are doing a wonderful job remembering these strategies!

We will continue place value next week during math. The love math workshop and working through math centers to enhance their learning.

We got together with our 4th grade buddy class on Wednesday. The fourth graders helped the first graders get logged into the laptops and navigate to the Lindbergh website and our class blog. The 4th graders really helped the first graders and it was a very successful buddy morning! (see pictures below)

We were the "video leaders" for the character assembly this month. Earlier this month they took pictures of other Concord kids Being Proactive - Habit 1. We put those pictures into a slide show and presented the slide show today at the assembly. I am so proud of how well my first graders noticed others making proactive choices.(see pictures below)

Peanut Free Snack
Please do not send in peanut snacks. Our room is a peanut free zone! No peanuts and nothing made in a factory with peanuts. This is very important for birthday treats as well! Thank you in advance for your support!

Finally, here are some fun things to talk to your child about:

  • Ask your child which day is their Ipad day. Find out when they get extra time on the Ipad.
  • Ask them about the treasure chest. (there are fun passes in the chest- stinky feet pass, show and tell pass, hat day pass...)
  • Ask them to tell you about their favorite part of the day.

Using the interactive white board

Hello Families,
Tomorrow is an Early Release day. I have the information from the gold paper that was filled out the first week of school. If that information has changed, please send a written note telling me the dismissal change. You may write in the planner or a separate note. Dismissal with be at 1:40 pm. Don't forget that the students will always have lunch on early release days. There is no school on Friday, September 27th. The students will not have a spelling words that week.

We started our Student Spotlight this week. The student in the spotlight will always pick a color for the class to try to wear on Wednesdays. Please be on the lookout for the reminder in the planner on Mondays or Tuesdays. Here is Elena. She is showing her items at Show and Tell. Your child will get to do this when they are in the spotlight. You will get the reminder on the Friday before their week.

The students enjoyed practicing Place Value with the interactive white board!!

Sharing During Writer's Workshop

The students love to share what they have written during Writer's Workshop. They learn so much just by sharing their work. Please enjoy the photos of the kiddos!

reminders

Friday:
  • Homework due (the entire packet)
  • Hat day- donate a dollar, wear a hat (to help support the Gapsch family, we are asking that students donate at least $1 to wear a hat on Friday).
  • library (bring library books)
  • Movie Night
  • Pajama Day Monday for our class (see below)

*The students' desks are in pods. They get to name their pod and I keep track of pod points for the month. They get points for being responsible, being quiet and basically displaying the 7 habits. The pod that had the most points for the month of August was the "Super First Graders" and they chose a theme day reward for our class. They chose to wear pj's. Please send your child in pajamas and tennis shoes on Monday. Their desks have been moved and they have new pod names for the month of September. The three pod names are: First Grade Spy Kids, American Horse Leaders, and The Ozarks. Good Luck to all three pods and we will see who the winners are at the end of the month!

Leveled Book List

Hello Families,
The yellow packet that came home yesterday is a resource for you and your child. Once we start guided reading, I will give you your child's current instructional reading level. You may use the yellow packet as a guide for choosing books at the county library or bookstore. Maybe you want to purchase books for a birthday gift and the resource packet can guide you to some good titles for your child.
